What Is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program designed primarily for people age 65 and older, but it also covers younger individuals with certain disabilities and those with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

At EIMA Health, we help you understand your choices and connect you with plans that match your unique health and financial needs.

You may be eligible for Medicare if:

  • You’re 65 or older
  • You’ve been receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) for 24 months
  • You have ESRD or ALS

What About Medigap (Medicare Supplement Insurance)?

Medigap plans help cover costs that Original Medicare (Parts A & B) doesn’t, such as:

  • Copayments
  • Coinsurance
  • Deductibles

These plans are standardized and named by letters (Plan A, Plan G, Plan N, etc.). You must have Original Medicare to buy a Medigap policy. Most don’t include drug coverage—so you may also need a Part D plan.

When to Enroll in Medicare

Timing matters. Here’s when you can sign up:

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

Starts 3 months before your 65th birthday and ends 3 months after. This is the best time to enroll to avoid penalties.

General Enrollment Period (GEP)

From January 1 – March 31 each year. Coverage begins July 1. You may pay a late enrollment penalty.

Open Enrollment Period (OEP)

From October 15 – December 7 each year. This is when you can:

  • Switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage
  • Switch between Medicare Advantage plans
  • Add, drop, or change a Part D plan

Special Enrollment Periods (SEP)

You may qualify if you:

  • Move out of your plan’s area
  • Lose employer coverage
  • Qualify for Medicaid or Extra Help

Helping you find the right Medicare plan

Understanding the Four Parts of Medicare

Medicare is divided into four parts. Here’s what each one covers:

Part A – Hospital Insurance

Helps cover:

  • Inpatient hospital stays
  • Skilled nursing facility care
  • Hospice care
  • Some home health care

Cost: Usually premium-free if you or your spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.

Part B – Medical Insurance

Helps cover:

  • Doctor visits
  • Outpatient care
  • Preventive services
  • Durable medical equipment

Cost: Monthly premium required (based on income), plus a yearly deductible and 20% coinsurance for most services.

Part C – Medicare Advantage

Also known as Medicare Advantage, Part C plans are offered by private insurers like those we work with at EIMA Health. These plans:

  • Include all benefits from Parts A & B
  • Often include Part D (prescription drug coverage)
  • May cover extra services like dental, vision, hearing, and wellness programs
  • Have an annual out-of-pocket maximum, which Original Medicare doesn’t provide

Part D – Prescription Drug Coverage

Helps cover the cost of:

  • Prescription medications
  • Common vaccines
  • Some specialty drugs

Note: Part D plans are offered by private insurers. You can get one as a standalone plan or bundled with a Medicare Advantage plan
